Assignment 4A: Types of Writing Patterns

For this course, we will cover five different patterns of writing. Just so you know, there are more out there!

comparison & contrast [similarities (comparisons) between two or more things are presented, differences (contrasts) between two or more things are presented, or both similarities and differences are presented];
process [do this, then do this, then do this; or this happens, then this happens, then this happens];
cause & effect [this happens, then (as a result) this happens]
definition [narrowing groups of meanings, from the broad class to which the term belongs, to the narrower groups, to the individual distinguishing characteristics
chronological [this happened, then this happened, then this happened].

Your assignment is to visit Teen Ink, an online magazine. Go through the site and select a non-fiction article to read. You should determine the writing pattern that the author uses. Be sure you select an article that has a writing pattern that you recognize. To complete this assignment, answer the following questions:

1. What is the name of your article?
2. Who wrote it?
3. What is the topic of the article?
4. What is the writing pattern of the article?
